Craving a warm, comforting, and quick Japanese home-style meal? Oyakodon hits the spot perfectly! Tender chicken and runny eggs coat sweet, soft onions, all served over steaming hot rice. With the Geedel Food Chopper, you can quickly chop onions into uniform pieces that absorb the sauce in no time—making this classic comfort food easier than ever to make at home. 

Ingredients

- 1 boneless, skinless chicken thigh (about 7oz/200g), cut into bite-sized pieces

- ½ large onion

 - 3 large eggs, lightly beaten in a bowl (don’t overmix—keep some streaks of egg white and yolk)

- 2 bowls of hot cooked white rice

- For the sauce:

 ½ cup dashi (or water), 1.5 tbsp mirin, 1.5 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tsp granulated sugar

- 1 tbsp chopped chives (for garnish)

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Onions

Cut the onion in half, then into large chunks. Attach the chopping blade to your Geedel Manual Vegetable Chopper. Add the onion chunks to the chopper, secure the lid tightly, and crank the handle for 1-2 seconds at a time, pausing between cranks—repeat about 5-6 times total. Aim for uniform, thumbnail-sized onion pieces (not fine mince)! This texture keeps a slight crunch while softening quickly and absorbing the sauce. Set aside.

 Step 2: Cook the Chicken & Onions

In a small skillet or donburi pan, mix the dashi (or water), mirin, soy sauce, and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions from Step 1 and cook for about 1 minute until slightly softened. Arrange the chicken pieces evenly over the onions (don’t overlap). Reduce heat to medium and cook for 4-5 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked—skim off any foam that rises to the surface if needed.

Step 3: Pour in the Eggs

Slowly pour the lightly beaten eggs over the chicken and onions in a circular motion, ensuring even coverage. Immediately cover the pan with a lid, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 1-1.5 minutes until the eggs reach your desired doneness (traditionally, the edges are set but the center remains creamy and slightly runny).

Step 4: Serve

Quickly slide the entire mixture (including the sauce) over the hot rice in two bowls. Garnish with chopped chives and enjoy right away!
