Portuguese Codfish Croquettes
These golden-brown codfish croquettes, crispy on the outside and tender inside, are a beloved snack in Portuguese taverns. They perfectly combine savory salted cod with creamy potatoes. Your Geedel food chopper quickly chops boiled cod and potatoes into fine, even pieces and effortlessly mixes all the filling ingredients, making this exotic snack surprisingly simple to prepare at home.
Ingredients:
- 200g salted cod (soaked to desalinate) or cooked cod fillet
- 300g potatoes, peeled and boiled
- 1 onion
- A handful of fresh parsley
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- Salt, black pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg
- Vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Core Ingredients:
Cut the boiled cod, potatoes, and onion into large chunks. Attach the chopping blade to your Geedel manual vegetable chopper.
Place all ingredients into the container, secure the lid, and turn the handle continuously until the mixture is finely and evenly chopped, with no large pieces remaining. Transfer to a large bowl.

2. Mix the Filling:
Place the parsley in the container (no need to wash it) and quickly turn the handle to chop finely. Add to the bowl.
Switch to the mixing paddle. Add eggs, flour, salt, black pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg to the bowl. Use the mixing paddle as a stirring tool, moving it through the mixture in one direction until all ingredients are thoroughly combined into a sticky paste.
3. Shape and Fry:
Lightly oil or wet your hands, then scoop portions of the mixture and shape into small balls about the size of golf balls.
Heat oil in a deep pot to 170°C (340°F). Fry the croquettes in batches for 4–5 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
4. Serve:
Enjoy hot with lemon wedges or spicy mayonnaise.
Summary:
The texture of this Portuguese snack relies on the fine, even consistency of the filling. The Geedel vegetable chopper efficiently processes all solid ingredients into the ideal texture, while its mixing function ensures perfect integration of the wet ingredients. It’s your convenient bridge to exploring the coastal flavors of Europe.
